The tour organization Explore Buffalo will be offering several cemetery tours in August.
Concordia Cemetery – August 17 and 28
Concordia Cemetery was founded in 1859 and is one of the oldest cemeteries in Western New York. The cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of Buffalonians over two centuries. After being abandoned in 2001, the cemetery is now maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers. This walking tour of Concordia Cemetery will share the history of the cemetery and the stories of some of the incredible individuals and families buried there.
United German and French Cemetery – August 5, 10 and 14
This walking tour of the United German & French Cemetery explores the final resting places of some of the earliest residents of Buffalo, who grew industries, built civic institutions, and shaped the city. You will be introduced to manufacturers, inventors, brewers, craftsmen, heroes, sportsmen, a brothel owner, and a sandwich maker – all of whom called Buffalo their home.
Jewish Cemeteries – August 18 and 29
These cemeteries have varied histories: some are maintained by active synagogues or organizations and others still cared for. They are important parts of the Jewish legacy in western New York. Visiting these cemeteries provides a look at the growth and evolution of Buffalo’s Jewish community, as synagogues were formed, grew, and in some cases, merged back together. This tour will tell the story of Jewish immigrants coming to Buffalo, including the connection between Sokolivka and Buffalo
The cost for each tour is : General Admission: $18 and Children and Students: $8. To register, go to: https://explorebuffalo.org/calendar/ and select the appropriate date.
