Several New York cemetery tours to be offered in August

Several New York cemeteries will be offering guided cemetery tours during the month of August.

The Niagara History Center will present “Cemetery Tales” at the Glenwood Cemetery in Lockport on Sunday, August 4 at 1 p.m. This is a walking tour so walking shoes are recommended and chairs are allowed. The tour will last two hours. Some of the famous “residents” you will meet include: Raphael Beck , famous local artist; William R. Kenan, industrialist  and philanthropist; and Burt Van Horn, Civil War- era congressman. The cost is $10 per person and must be paid in cash. The Clinton County Historical Association will be hosting a cemetery tour on Saturday, August 10 at 9:30 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery. Visit the graves of Plattsburg pioneers and notables with narrations by several members of the historical association. Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester will be offering a “Murdered by Men” tour on Saturday, August 10 at 11 a.m. Step into the shadows and learn about the forgotten women who lost their lives at the hands of husbands, boyfriends, and strangers..  To register, go to: https://fomh.org/event/murdered-by-men/

The Yates History Center will be hosting a cemetery tour of Saturday, August 17 at 2 p.m. Watch and listen as historical figures from Yates County’s past share their life stories and talk about some of the moments that shaped our history and our present. From early pioneers to turn-of-the century residents, these people have much to tell about their experiences in life. The tour will take place at the Benton Rural Cemetery on Havens Corners Road between the Flat Street and North Flat Street intersections. “We Fight in a Glorious Cause” on Saturday, August 24 at 11 a.m. Learn about those who faced the horrors and challenges of the American Civil War. To register, go to:  https://fomh.org/event/we-fight-in-a-glorious-cause-stories-of-courage-honor-and-fate-encore/

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn offers a variety of tours in August.  Some of the tours being offered include:

Battle of Brooklyn Trolley Tour – Saturday,  August 24 – 10 a.m. – Join historian Barnet Schecter, author of The Battle for New York, and the Green-Wood historian for this annual trolley tour of Green-Wood’s Revolutionary War-related sites. On August 27, 1776, Green-Wood was a battlefield—and much of the largest battle of the war was fought across its grounds.

Green-Wood’s Greatest Hits – Sundays, August 4 and 18 – On this walking tour, you will tread where George Washington and his troops fought in the Battle of Brooklyn; learn of the massive fire that struck the Brooklyn Theatre in 1876; pay your respects to the maestro, Leonard Bernstein; and discover much more.

Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation will present  a two hour walking tour of “The Women of Greenridge Cemetery” on Sunday, August 18 at 10:30 a.m. Learn about the prominent and influential women, as well as the ordinary, who are buried in Greenridge Cemetery and whose life stories tell the history of Saratoga Springs.  Tours are limited to 30 and tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. Historic Ithaca will present a walk and tour of Pleasant Grove Cemetery on Saturday, August 24 at 9 a.m. Follow the story of what was once known as “a little country graveyard” through its twentieth-century expansion. On the tour, we will “read” gravestones for the stories they tell of the people whose lives now commemorated in stone intersected with momentous political, social, and cultural events. The evolving iconography of twenty-first-century grave memorials reveal cultural traditions from around the world that have enriched the county’s history.
