New York public libraries offer free programs in August – Update

Many New York State public libraries will be offering free genealogy programs in August.

The Hamlin Public Library (Monroe County) provides free Genealogy Help every Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Need help with your family tree? Stop by or call ahead and make an appointment with Tracy.  For more information, call 585-964-2320. https://hamlinlibraryny.org/events/

The Prendergast Library (Chautauqua County) holds a Genealogy Lab Workshop every Friday from 2-4 p.m. https://www.prendergastlibrary.org/genealogy-and-memory-lab/

South Huntington Public Library (Suffolk County) will offer an in person Genealogy Drop-In on Thursday, August 1 from 10 a.m. to noon. Thinking about tracing your roots but don’t know where to start? Or maybe your search is under way and you’ve hit a dead end. Retired librarian PJ will be on hand to show you how you can access free genealogical resources, including Ancestry, through the library and to offer search tips and advice. No registration necessary.

The Chatham Public Library will host Chatham Roots genealogy club on Thursday, August 1 at 2 p.m. This free monthly genealogy club can assist in the search for your family. For beginners, experts and everyone in between. We will work on those elusive ancestors, break down your brick walls, share tips and tricks and just have fun. The Steele Memorial Library (Chemung County) will present “Records of NYC’s Emigrant Savings Bank” on Thursday, August 6 at 6 p.m. Learn about accessing New York City’s Emigrant Savings Bank records that began in 1850, many containing detailed genealogy on immigrants from Europe, Russia, Canada, the West Indies, and even native Americans.

Week of August 11 – 17

Yonkers Public Library (Westchester County) will present “Create Your Family Tree” on Monday, August 12 at 10 a.m. Get together to talk about your genealogical research. Learn how to access thousands of genealogical records using the Library’s online resources and databases such as Family Search and Ancestry! The Wood Library will host a Genealogy Club on Tuesday, Aug 13 at 4 p.m. Are you just starting a family tree? Have you run into a brick wall tracing a distant ancestor? Learn how to conduct a basic search and use other helpful tools to find relatives. All levels of experience are welcome. The Penn Yan Public Library (Yates County) will host a Family Research Support Group on Wednesday, August 14 at 4 p.m. Learn from others and share your own tips and stories from your genealogical journeys in this ongoing, participant-driven program. The Steel Memorial Library (Chemung County) will have a Genealogy Lab from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 15. Search for your family tree on Steele Library computers in the PC Lab. Use our resources: Ancestry Library Edition, Fold3, Newspapers.com Library Edition, and more! Or stop in and ask our genealogy staff a question about finding your ancestors. The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library will present “Western New York History Resources” on Friday, August 16 at 2 p.m. This is a Zoom event. There’s a number of institutions both locally and nationally that have digital holdings that fill in the gaps in the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library collections. This webinar will focus on the who, what, where, and when of basic local history and genealogy research, connecting our most popular resources with their counterparts or complements in other institution’s digital collections. Week of August 18 – 24

The Glen Cove Public Library (Nassau County) will host a Genealogy Roundtable on Monday, August 19 at 7 p.m. Share strategies and encourage one another on your research journey. The New City Library will present an in person program on Ancestry.com on Tuesday, August 19 at 10 a.m. Learn the basics of the library edition of Ancestry.com as well as helpful tips for searching for vital records. The Tully Free Library (Onondaga County) will have a Genealogy Club meeting in person from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20. All are welcome regardless of their level of experience. While learning about how to improve your research skills, you can make use of many genealogy resources at the library, including Ancestry.com.

West Hempstead Public Library (Nassau County) will present “Passenger Lists and Naturalization Records” on Wednesday, August 21 at 7 p.m. Learn what information can be found in passenger lists and naturalization records to help you with your family research. The history of passenger lists and naturalization records will be discussed as well as where to find online indexes. The Monroe Free Library (Orange County) will a Walk-In Genealogy program on Friday, August 23  from 10 – 11 a.m. Come to the Information desk and ask for Mike. He will spend some time with you to try and help answer your genealogy questions. Sign up not needed but it is recommended that you call first so he can be best prepared to help you.

Volunteers from the Western New York Genealogical Society will be at the Central Library of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library on Saturday, August 24 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. to offer research assistance.

The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library will present “German-Americans and WWI: How the War Affected the People and Their Culture” on Saturday, August 24 at 12:30 p.m. Before sending troops overseas, the U.S. government created propaganda campaigns to garner public support to enter WWI. These efforts greatly impacted the lives of German-Americans, many of whom had lived in this country for generations. The images of scary Germans invading our shores created paranoia and even attacks on German-Americans and lead to many being sent to internment camps. The anti-German sentiment had a drastic effect on the culture and led to changes which are still part of our current way of life.

*Springfield Public Library (Otsego County) will present an in person program, “Using Ancestry.com,” on Thursday, August 29 at 4 p.m. Learn how to use Ancestry.com to further your family history research.

Volunteers from the Western New York Genealogical Society will be at the Central Library of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library on Friday, August 30 from noon to 3 p.m. to offer research assistance.
