Orange County Genealogical Society will present “Records Available at the Orange County Clerk’s Office” on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the 1841 Historic Courthouse in Goshen. The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will have an in-person meeting on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Heritage Discovery Center at 100 Lee Street. The topic will be using Ancestry including how to fix errors, merge duplicate individuals, etc.

The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “A History of Mental Health Care and Its Institutions in New York State” on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. During the nineteenth century, significant progress was made in the understanding and treatment of mental illness. In New York, the efforts of both physicians and reformers lead to a series of laws that would usher in a more widespread focus on Moral Management. As this system was implemented in institutions specifically designed for its use, the nineteenth century saw a continued, if slow, improvement in the care of the insane. Jefferson County NY Genealogical Society will host a meeting on the Civil War on Monday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Watertown. The speaker will be Rev. Cannon Samuel P. Lundy, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War who will discuss the Civil War from a chaplain’s perspective. The event is free and open to the public.
Chautauqua County Genealogical Society will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cassadaga American Legion. The speaker will be Virginia Becker from the Sheridan Historical Society. Her presentation, entitled “Dreams of Eagle Bay,” is a partial history of the land along the Lake Erie shoreline in the Town of Sheridan where the St. Columban’s on-the-Lake Retirement Home is located. She will share the changes that the area has seen over the years…what was, what could have been and what is now.
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present “Genealogy Comparisons and Contrasts Between New York and Pennsylvania Genealogy” on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Learn about the history of those migrations and the different records you need to trace families between the two states. The Ulster County Genealogical Society will present “How Do I Approach New York?” on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Susan R. Miller of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will discuss finding records of your New York ancestors. Understanding New York City and State history; types of records created under Dutch, English, and post-colonial governments; and New York’s municipality structure and boundary changes are key to finding the records.
