New York public libraries offer free December programs

Many New York State public libraries will be offering free genealogy programs in the first half of December.

The Hamlin Public Library (Monroe County) provides free Genealogy Help every Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Need help with your family tree? Stop by or call ahead and make an appointment with Tracy.  For more information, call 585-964-2320 or go to:  https://hamlinlibraryny.org/

Week of December 1-7

Yonkers Public Library (Westchester County) will present “Create Your Family Tree” on Monday, Dec. 3 at 10 a.m. Learn how to access thousands of genealogical records using the Library’s online resources and databases such as HeritageQuest, Family Search and Ancestry! This is an English and Spanish bilingual program. New York Public Library will present “Introduction to Jewish Genealogy” on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. This session will focus on genealogy basics, resources in the Local History and Genealogy collection, and utilizing online databases.  To register, go to: https://www.nypl.org/events/programs/2024/12/04/introduction-jewish-genealogy-research-local-history-and-genealogy

The Clifton-Park Halfmoon Public Library (Saratoga County) will have a Genealogy Assistance program on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop in from 11 a.m. to noon and then stay for the round table discussion from noon to 1 p.m.

New York Public Library will present “Next Steps in Jewish Genealogy” on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. The focus of this session will be on resources located within the Dorot Jewish Division, as well as materials specific to Jewish subjects that could assist in providing context to your discoveries. South Huntington Public Library (Suffolk County) will offer an in person Genealogy Drop-In on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. Thinking about tracing your roots but don’t know where to start? Or maybe your search is under way and you’ve hit a dead end. Retired librarian PJ will be on hand to show you how you can access free genealogical resources, including Ancestry, through the library and to offer search tips and advice. No registration necessary.

The Chatham Public Library (Columbia County) will host Chatham Roots genealogy club on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. This free monthly genealogy club can assist in the search for your family. For beginners, experts and everyone in between. We will work on those elusive ancestors, break down your brick walls, share tips and tricks and just have fun. Week of  December 8 – 14

The Guilderland Public Library (Albany County) will host a Genealogy Assistance Program on Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Professional Genealogist Lisa Dougherty offers one on one family history consultations at the Library. This is a drop-in session; no need to make an appointment.

Greece Public Library will present (Monroe County) “The Archive of Black History and Culture” on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The presenter will highlight the plethora of both print and digital resources readily available to the public and discuss best practice for navigating genealogical resources. The Steele Memorial Library (Chemung County) will host a Genealogy Lab on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 10 a.m. Search for your family tree on Steele Library Computers in the PC Lab. Use our resources: Ancestry library edition, Fold3, Newspapers.com library edition, and more! To register, go to the calendar of events and click on December 12.

Volunteers from the Western New York Genealogical Society will be at the Central Library of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library on Friday, Dec. 13  from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to offer research assistance.

The Steele Memorial Library (Chemung County) will host a Genealogy Club on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. The purpose of the club is to share information on records and approaches for starting or extending participants’ genealogical research. Participants are encouraged to bring records and problems from their own research for discussion. To register, go to the November calendar of events and click on Nov. 16.
