New York genealogy societies to offer January programs – Update

Several New York genealogy societies will present programs during the month of  January.

The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will have its genealogical library open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Saturday, Jan. 11. For more information, contact Donna Shine at librarian@bigswny.org

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present “Dual Citizenship: Ireland and Italy” on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. This is a Zoom presentation. Learn more about Irish and Italian dual citizenship, including its benefits, the laws governing citizenship, records needed to apply, and other information necessary for compiling a successful dual citizenship application. The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “Beginning of Tribal Organization and the Polish State Based on Archaeological Research” on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.  Learn about the results of research on the oldest periods of tribal organization and the formation of the Polish state (6th–12th centuries), based on the latest archaeological analysis. Archaeologists are currently using many new methods as part of interdisciplinary studies. DNA analysis is also commonly used. Westchester County Genealogical Society will present “Resources of the Westchester County Historical Society” on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10 am via Zoom. Patrick Raftery of the Westchester County Historical Society will discuss the resources held in their library, particularly those useful for genealogists. The Rochester Genealogical Society will present “My Great-Grandfather was the Milkman – A DNA Case Study” on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. In this case study, Jacob Rouse was born in 1804 in Pennsylvania and died in 1885 in Michigan. He was the presenter’s  3rd Great-Grandfather.  To find out who his parents were, the presenter’s uncle took a Y DNA test. The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will have a meeting on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Heritage Discovery Center, 100 Lee Street.

Jewish Genealogy Society of New York will present a virtual program, “Making the Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne Your Research Assistant,” on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. This presentation will cover how to explore the expansive holdings and datafiles of the Genealogy Center of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with an emphasis on Jewish family history research. It will help you to plan a research trip and prepare to visit in person during the 2025 IAJGS Conference in Fort Wayne, or to use the Genealogy Center remotely.  For information on how to attend the meeting, go to: https://jgsny.org/

The Genealogy Society of Rockland County will present “Passports for Genealogy” Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. We’ll watch a pre-recorded video from the National Archives detailing the history of U.S. passports and their applications, and the types of genealogical information that can be extracted from them.
