New York genealogy societies to offer February programs

Several New York genealogy societies will present programs during the month of  February.

The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will have its genealogical library open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 8. For more information, contact Donna Shine at librarian@bigswny.org

The Ontario County Genealogy Society will present “The World War I Draft” on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Ontario County Historical Society Museum, 55 North Main Street, Canandaigua. For more information, go to: https://www.ocgsny.net/home

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present “Genealogy 101” on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. This is an in person presentation. Join Stacey Bell, President of the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society – Jean Sampson Scott Greater New York Chapter and D. Joshua Taylor, NYG&B President and CEO, for a session on the essentials for tracing your family history and connecting to your past. Whether you’re just starting out on your family history search or need a refresher on the basics, this session will set you up with the fundamental building blocks for family history research. The Rochester Genealogical Society will present “Searching the Online Databases at AmericanAncestors.org” on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. Although much of the collection focuses on New England, records from around the U.S. and even some from other countries are available. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the website and will go through the basics of searching these valuable databases. The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will host a Research Night on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.  Research Nights offer our members a chance to share their questions, insights, and discoveries with other attendees, both in person and on Zoom. The Western New York Genealogical Society will present “The Underground Railroad Runs Through Here” on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 10:30 a.m. This will be a Zoom presentation. Jewish Genealogy Society of New York will present a virtual program, “Researching Small Landsmanshaft Synagogues on the Lower East Side” on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. While few of them still exist today, the landsmanshaft synagogues were once an important feature in the lives of our ancestors who wanted a place to pray, celebrate marriages, and simply be with friends and family from the same town back in Europe. Learn about the rise and fall of these little synagogues, how to find further information on specific ones, and ways to use synagogues to discover additional members of your family. The Genealogy Society of Rockland County will present “Deeds at the Rockland County Archives” Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.  Tracing the former owners of your house in Rockland County can be tricky, but also very rewarding.
