NY genealogy societies offer free April programs

Several New York genealogy societies will present programs during the month of  April.

The Ontario County Genealogy Society will have a meeting on Wednesday,  April 2 at 7 p.m. at the Ontario County Historical Society Museum, 55 North Main Street, Canandaigua. For more information, go to: https://www.ocgsny.net/home

The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will have its genealogical library open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 and Saturday, March 12. For more information, contact Donna Shine at librarian@bigswny.org

Orange County Genealogical Society will present “An Orange County Militia Revolution” on Saturday, April 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the 1841 Historic Courthouse in Goshen. Town of Warwick Deputy Historian Sue Gardner will present the story of Orange County’s 4th Militia Regiment under the command of Gen. John Hathorn during the Revolutionary War. Using primary sources such as pension application accounts, Gardner will show that these citizen soldiers were sent far and wide to fill in the ranks, participated in most of the major battles of the lower and Mid-Hudson, and provided essential support services for the Continental Army.  The Research Room will be open after the presentation. The Rochester Genealogical Society TIG will present “Overview of Family Tree Magazine’s 2024 101 Best Genealogy Websites List” on Tuesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. During this program, the focus will be on the sites that are NEW to the list this year. The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “Using Genealogia w Archiwach” on Thursday, April 10 at 7 p.m.  Genealogia w Archiwach is a unique Polish historical records repository that is a significant source of digital images from collections in the state archives of Bydgoszcz, Inowrocław, Toruń, and Włocławek. These archives cover territory in the present-day provinces of Pomorskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Warminsko-Mazurskie, and Wielkopolskie, and the digital images at this site are not found in Szukaj w Archiwach. The Western New York Genealogical Society will present “From Local Militia to the Continental Line” on Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. This will be a Zoom presentation. Did your ancestor serve on the local level, the state level, or the federal level in the American Revolution? How can you tell? This program will explain the different types of Revolutionary War army service and how the differences in service might have impacted where your ancestor was recorded. The Buffalo Genealogical Society of the African Diaspora will meet on Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at the Frank E. Merriweather, Jr. Branch of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library.

The Jefferson County NY Genealogical Society, located in  Watertown, will present a talk on the new website for the Jefferson County NY Genealogical Society on Monday, April 14 at 6 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Ives Street. The Genealogy Society of Rockland County will present “Books Available on FamilySearch.org” on Tuesday, April 22 at 2 p.m. Local History Librarian Joe Barbieri will discuss the thousands of family histories, town and county histories, and yearbooks available on FamilySearch.org. Jewish Genealogy Society of New York will meet at the Center for Jewish History on Sunday, April 27 from 2-4 p.m. for a presentation on “AI in Genealogy: Practical Applications and Limitations for Family Research.” This presentation explores the practical applications and current limitations of artificial intelligence in genealogical research. Drawing from his experience, the presenter will demonstrate real-world AI applications, including a specialized tool he’s collaboratively developing that analyzes cemetery headstones – extracting and translating text, describing symbols, and providing cultural context particularly relevant for Jewish genealogy.  For more information, go to: https://jgsny.org/

The Niagara County Genealogical Society will present “To Catch a Serial Killer” on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. This presentation provides a visual introduction to the Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) process.  A case study, based on an actual current-day serial killer case, will be used to illustrate the core methodology of IGG. The concepts of shared matches, clusters/genetic networks, Most Recent Common Ancestors, and union couples will be explained in the context of zeroing in on a small list of candidate(s) for the unknown perpetrator.
