New York public libraries to offer genealogy programs in April

Many New York public libraries will be offering free genealogy programs in the second half of April.

Week of April 13-19

New York Public Library will present “Getting Organized with Your Genealogy Research” on Wednesday, April 16  at 5 p.m.  Learn tips and suggestions for organizing your genealogy research, with the goal of making you a better researcher. Attendees will learn about information organizers, citations, and planning for research trips. Fairport Public Library (Monroe County) will present “Crafting Genealogy Photo Memory Books” on Wednesday, April 16 at 6 p.m. Preserve your family’s unique story with a genealogy photo memory book. This program guides participants in compiling family photos, genealogy records, and cherished memories alongside recipes, milestone dates, and more. The Crandall Public Library will offer a One-on-One genealogy assistance on Wednesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. Are you interested in your family history but have no idea where to start? Has your genealogy research recently hit a brick wall? No appointment is necessary. Just drop-in for assistance.

The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library (Erie County) will present “Sharing Resources and Tips” on Wednesday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. This is a Zoom presentation. Share your favorite genealogy “anything” such as blogs, websites, tools, apps, software, books, magazines, research tips or anything else. The Oceanside Public Library ( Nassau County) will present “Cookbooks as Genealogy Resources” on April 17 at 7 p.m. Vintage cookbooks can be an excellent source of genealogical information and social history that can fill in and add depth to the lives of our ancestors, especially our women ancestors. Learn how to find and use these fascinating resources. This is an in person program.

The Rochester Genealogical Society will host a DNA Help Session at the Irondequoit Public Library on Wednesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. Registration is required for DNA Sessions. DNA Help Sessions are designed to assist individuals and/or small groups answer DNA questions and help guide you in utilizing DNA in your research. Please register and complete the short registration form and if you have any questions, please email DNA@nyrgs.org.

The Port Jervis Free Library (Orange County) will present a Genealogy Workshop on Wednesday,  April 16 at 2 p.m. A discussion between those looking into their family tree, as well as hands on help using Ancestry.com as a resource, and tips and guidance from the president of the Minisink Historical Society. The Monroe Free Library (Orange County) will a Walk-In Genealogy program on Friday, April 18 from 10 – 11 a.m. Come to the Information desk and ask for Mike. He will spend some time with you to try and help answer your genealogy questions. Sign up not needed but it is recommended that you call first so he can be best prepared to help you.

Week of  April 20 – 26

Yonkers Public Library will offer “Create Your Family Tree” on Monday, April 21 at 10 a.m. Get together to talk about your genealogical research. Learn how to access thousands of genealogical records using the Library’s online resources and databases such as HeritageQuest, Family Search and Ancestry! The Fairport Public Library (Monroe County) will present “RootsTech 2025 Overview” on Monday, April 21 at 1 p.m. This is an in-person meeting. Learn about what was offered at this year’s RootsTech and what you can continue to access and learn from this resource all year long. Registration is not required.

The Williamson Public Library (Wayne County) will present “Genealogy Group Tech Help” on Tuesday, April 22 at 1 p.m.  The in-person program is designed to provide the basic and intermediate instructions needed to use the genealogy researching features on Ancestry.com Library Edition. Bring your questions and your laptop, if you have one. No registration is needed.

The Onondaga County Public Libraries will present  “Sharing Family Recipes” on Friday, April 25 at 11 a.m. via Zoom. The Guilderland Public Library (Albany County) will have a Genealogy Research Help Day on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Capital District Genealogy Society members will be offering a walk-in genealogy query session for the public. Members will be ready with their laptops to help you with your family history questions. Each person will have a 30-minute appointment.
