Several New York State genealogy societies will be hosting programs the first half of October.
The Ontario County Genealogical Society will present “Advanced Genealogy” on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. at the Ontario County Historical Society Museum in Canandaigua.

The Southern Tier Genealogical Society will present “Welcome to Vestal – A History and a Reference” on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the United Way is Vestal. Each of the more than 30 chapters in this new book provide history and photographs on topics such as: Education, Highways, Archaeology, Land and Property, Business and Industry, the Military, Police and Fire departments, Census and Genealogy, Legends and Myths, Crimes, and so much more. We’ll also look at some interesting bits of history that never happened.

The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will present a DNA case study on the Leeds Method and a tutorial on Gedmatch and DNA painter, and how the three can work together on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Heritage Discovery Center.
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present “African Americans in the Archives: Federal Records for Black History” on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The presenter will discuss what records can be found in the National Archives, what information can be gleaned from them and how to search for and access those records. This is a Zoom presentation.

The Polish Genealogical Society of New York will present “Buffalo Polish Churches” on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. In this presentation learn about the Polish-American congregations of Buffalo. From the grand Roman Catholic parishes of St. Stanislaus and St. Casimir, to the historic Holy Mother of the Rosary Cathedral, a number of the Queen City’s churches will be explored in depth. Short-lived houses of worship such as the Polish Independent Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Miller, and the Polish People’s Presbyterian Church on Genesee, will also be featured.

**The Westchester County Genealogical Society will host a Zoom meeting on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. The speaker will be Brian Rhinehart who is a professional genealogist and speaker and is the owner of CivilWarRecords.com. A direct descendant of seven Civil War soldiers, Brian specializes in research and record retrieval for Civil War and War of 1812 soldiers at the National Archives in Washington DC. The Jewish Genealogy Society of New York will present “Discovering My Litvak Ancestry” on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. This will be a Zoom presentation. The presenter will tell the story of how he traced the ancestry of his grandfather. The only ancestors whose names his grandfather knew were his parents, and he was not aware that his parents came from Lithuania. Through detailed and often painstaking research, the presenter managed to identify by name 46 Litvak ancestors who had been completely forgotten.
