Several New York genealogy societies will be meeting in the second half of October.
Volunteers of the Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will be at the Heritage Discovery Center on Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help with genealogical research. For more information, email librarian@bigswny.org
The Rochester Genealogical Society will present “The Jeffrey Family of Connecticut, Discovering History Though Genealogy” on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 6:45 p.m. Through genealogical research the presenter discovered the role his family (the Jeffrey family) played in the Connecticut civil rights and abolitionist movements in 1820-90’s. One band of the Jeffrey family relocated to Rochester in the 1830’s and became activists in the abolitionist and the Women’s Suffrage movements. It has been a journey of over twenty-five years and still going.

The Chautauqua Genealogical Society will present a talk on “Town of Busti Records” on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post 1280 in Cassadaga. Learn about the Holland Land Company records, the Foote papers, early censuses, and land contracts. For more information, call 716-965-2656.
The Genealogical Society of Rockland County will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the New City Public Library. After a year and half library renovation, there will be a tour of the Rockland Room’s new look, and a talk about some of the sources within its stacks with Local History Librarian Joe Barbieri. Non-members are always welcome to attend! This program will be a “hybrid” program, presented both in-person at the library and online via Zoom.

The Niagara County Genealogical Society will present “Clustering DNA: The What, Why and How” on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 7-8:30 p.m. This will be a Zoom presentation. Have you ever had difficulty uncovering shared match groups in your DNA results? Did you know there are several third-party sites that will create clusters that identify genetic networks? The speaker will present methods for clustering shared matches quickly and efficiently with third party tools. You will leave with a toolkit for clustering your shared matches into genetic networks to identify the most recent common ancestors. Western New York Genealogical Society will present “Spotlight on Wyoming County” on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. Curious about researching in Wyoming County? Then this session is for you! A panel consisting of historians and librarians will be available to answer questions and share available resources for Wyoming County research. Topics that will be discussed include: County and Local Historians, Vital Records, Court Records, Cemeteries, Library Resources and so much more! Come with questions to ask the panelist. The Capital District Genealogical Society will have a presentation on the Montgomery County Archives on Saturday, Oct. 28. Montgomery County (formerly Tryon County) once covered much of upstate New York including parts of the Capital District. Montgomery county Historian, Kelly Yacobucci Farquhar, will provide a brief history of the county and will review the many valuable resources for the genealogist and local historian available at the Montgomery County Department of History and Archives. Registration closes at midnight on the Thursday before the meeting.
