Western New York Genealogical Society will have its annual Business Meeting and Elections on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 10:30 a.m. This will be via Zoom. The meeting will be followed by a virtual tour of the new WNYGS website including the Members Area and then there will be break out rooms to meet an chat with other members. The Capital District Genealogical Society will present “Using Catholic Church Records in Family History Research” on Saturday, Nov. 18. Religious archives can be useful sources of genealogical information for many, but there are often questions about how they are organized and what useful information they actually have. In this session, there will be an overview of Catholic diocesan and religious archives and an explanation of how they can be useful sources for genealogical research. Included in the presentation will be information about the types of records available to outside researchers, information on how to access such records and discussion of access limitations Registration closes at midnight on the Thursday before the meeting. The Genealogical Society of Rockland County will present “Ancestry.com at the Library” on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. This is a great introduction to Ancestry.com – good starting place for beginner genealogists and a good refresher and chance to see what’s new with Ancestry for more seasoned genealogists. Non-members are always welcome to attend. This program will be in person at the New City Library and also be presented online via Zoom. The Central New York Genealogical Society Genealogy Interest Group (GIG) will meet via Zoom on Monday, November 27, at 6 p.m. In honor of our military veterans, the GIG program for this month’s meeting will be “Bringing a Soldier Home.” This is the story of Korean War soldier Corporal Joseph Trepasso and his family’s unrelenting quest to find their brother and uncle. It would take 66 years to bring him home to Fulton, NY to be buried with his family. The Rochester Genealogical Society will present “Finding Digitized National Archives and Records Administration Content” on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 6:45 p.m. This will be a hybrid meeting. In addition to the millions of records available through the NARA catalog, many genealogical organizations have worked to scan records as well, leading to many more that can be found by digging through the Ancestry and FamilySearch catalogs.
