According to the Nanuet Patch website, new legislation that was recently passed in New York State will allow the town of Clarkstown (Rockland County) to access state funding for the restoration and repair of three local abandoned cemeteries including Nanuet Rural Cemetery, Nyack Rural Cemetery and Mount Moor Cemetery.
The funds will be used to fix headstones, install markers and clear pathways for better access. Some of the headstones are broken or defaced.
Some of those interred in these cemeteries include founders of the county and veterans of the Revolutionary War.
The work is expected to take several months.
