New York libraries to offer free genealogy programs in September

Many New York State public libraries will be offering free genealogy programs in September.

The Hamlin Public Library (Monroe County) provides free Genealogy Help every Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Need help with your family tree? Stop by or call ahead and make an appointment with Tracy.  For more information, call 585-964-2320 or go to:  https://hamlinlibraryny.org/

Week of  September 1-7

South Huntington Public Library (Suffolk County) will offer an in person Genealogy Drop-In on Thursday, September 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. Thinking about tracing your roots but don’t know where to start? Or maybe your search is under way and you’ve hit a dead end. Retired librarian PJ will be on hand to show you how you can access free genealogical resources, including Ancestry, through the library and to offer search tips and advice. No registration necessary.

The Smithtown Public Library (Suffolk County) will present “Genealogy 101” on Thursday, September 5 at 7 p.m. Learn how to get started in your genealogical research. Learn tips for staying organized and searching databases like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. Focus will be on census records, the importance of seeing the actual vital record document, and important details hidden in plain sight on passenger lists. The Chatham Public Library will host Chatham Roots genealogy club on Thursday, September 5 at 2 p.m. This free monthly genealogy club can assist in the search for your family. For beginners, experts and everyone in between. We will work on those elusive ancestors, break down your brick walls, share tips and tricks and just have fun. The Rochester Genealogical Society and the Rochester Public Library will host Family Finder Genealogy Club on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Central Branch of the Rochester Public Library. Are you a fan of family history? Do you wonder who your ancestors were and how you can learn more about them? Whether you are an experienced researcher or just starting out,  join this friendly, informal monthly gathering. Explore your questions, share your discoveries, and research your family’s past alongside fellow ancestry seekers.

Yonkers Public Library (Westchester County) will present “Create Your Family Tree” on Monday, September 9 at 10 a.m. Get together to talk about your genealogical research. Learn how to access thousands of genealogical records using the Library’s online resources and databases such as HeritageQuest, Family Search and Ancestry! This is an English and Spanish bilingual program. New York Public Library will present “Getting Organized with Your Genealogy Research” on Wednesday, September 11 at 1 p.m. Please   join us for a librarian led class that will provide tips and suggestions for organizing your genealogy research, with the goal of making you a better researcher. Attendees will learn about information organizers, citations, and planning for research trips. Greece Public Library (Monroe County)  will present “How to Do Local History Research” on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. Find out the differences between libraries, archives, and museums to help you navigate every resource available when doing local history research. This session will cover the basics of creating a research question, how to copy records, and how to perform basic searches. The Guilderland Public Library (Albany County) will host a Genealogy Assistance Program on Wednesday, September 11 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Professional Genealogist Lisa Dougherty offers one on one family history consultations at the Library. This is a drop-in session; no need to make an appointment.

The Steele Memorial Library (Chemung County) will present “Researching Vital Records and Census Records” on Thursday, September 12 at 1:30 p.m.  This is an in person program. Registration is required. Call 607-733-9173 (option 4 for Reference) or email youngm@stls.org to register.

Volunteers from the Western New York Genealogical Society will be at the Central Library of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library on Thursday, September 12  from noon to 4:30 p.m. to offer research assistance.

The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library will present “Genealogy 101” on Friday, September 13 at 4 p.m. Learn basic family history research concepts and commonly used record types, as well as an overview of the genealogy resources available through the Buffalo & Erie County Library system.
