Project underway to mark Civil War graves in Syracuse

The Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse held an event this fall to honor Black Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery.

At the ceremony, James Jameson, a Black Civil War veteran who fought in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, was given a tombstone.  There are 845 verified Civil War soldiers buried in Oakwood but of these 75-80 Civil War veterans are  in unmarked graves and 10 of these are African American soldiers.

This event served as a launching point for the larger project of marking all unmarked Civil War veterans’ graves.
