Recently members of the Elting Memorial Library in New Paltz and the Historic Huguenot Street, also located in New Paltz, worked on solving a mystery regarding broken headstones that were found in a barn.
Three belonged to Revolutionary War soldiers from New Paltz. After extensive investigation, it was determined that most of the headstones belonged to people buried in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery but who had first been buried in long abandoned farm cemeteries. It is surmised that the headstones found in the barn were the original headstones from the farm cemeteries but these headstones had been replaced with obelisks when they were reburied in the Rural Cemetery.
Eventually it is hoped that the original headstones of the soldiers will be repaired and preserved so that they can be honored for their service.
